9th Class Maths Chapter 2 Online Test: 25 MCQs with Answers

This 9th class maths chapter 2 online test covers Chapter 2 of the Class 9 Mathematics course, Logarithms. It has 25 multiple-choice questions, shown one at a time, and it marks itself the moment you finish. There is no timer and no sign-up. When you press finish you get your score, and every question is shown again with your answer, the correct option and a short explanation of why that option is right. An Urdu medium version of the same test is given further down this page.

What Chapter 2 Covers

The 25 questions are spread across the whole unit rather than one exercise, so the test is a fair check of whether you are ready for a class test or the annual paper:

  • Scientific notation — writing numbers such as 0.00034 and 5.2 × 106 in standard form, and the rule that governs the coefficient a.
  • Common and natural logarithms — base 10 and base e, with log a and ln e.
  • Characteristic and mantissa — reading them off values such as log 725 and log 5000, including negative characteristics for numbers below 1.
  • Laws of logarithms — the product, quotient, power and change-of-base laws.
  • Converting between exponential and logarithmic form, such as 34 = 81.
  • Evaluating logarithms — log 100, log 10,000, log2 23 and log2 18 − log2 9.
  • Solving simple logarithmic equations such as log 2 + log x = 1.

Revise These Before You Start

Most marks in this unit are lost on the same few points. Read through these once before attempting the test:

  • In scientific notation a × 10n, the coefficient must satisfy 1 ≤ a < 10. If a number is smaller than 1, the exponent n is negative.
  • loga a = 1 and ln e = 1, because any base raised to the power 1 gives itself.
  • log 0 is undefined, and the base b of a logarithm must be positive and not equal to 1.
  • The characteristic is the integer part and the mantissa is the decimal part. In log 5000 = 3.698 the characteristic is 3 and the mantissa is 0.698.
  • The product law turns multiplication into addition: log 5 + log 3 = log 15. The quotient law turns division into subtraction.
  • The power law brings the exponent down in front: logb xn = n logb x.

How the Test Works

  • 25 questions, one at a time, with Next and Previous buttons.
  • No timer, so you can work a calculation out on paper before answering.
  • Automatic marking the moment you finish.
  • Answer review with the correct option and an explanation for every question.
  • Retake as many times as you like, and your score is not stored anywhere.

Start the Chapter 2 Online Test

Nearly every question in this chapter is one law applied once, so identify which law fits before you start calculating. Keep a pen and rough paper beside you: the numerical questions are quick, but they are much easier to get right written down than in your head. Aim for 20 out of 25 or better before you move on to the next unit.

Mistakes Students Make in This Unit

When you look through your answer review, check whether any of your wrong answers came from these:

  • Leaving the coefficient outside the range 1 ≤ a < 10, so 0.65 × 102 is not yet in scientific notation.
  • Giving a value for log 0 instead of calling it undefined.
  • Treating the characteristic of a number below 1 as positive when it must be negative.
  • Confusing the characteristic with the mantissa.
  • Writing log 5 + log 3 as log 8 instead of log 15.

What to Do After the Test

A score on its own teaches you very little. Go through the answer review properly and write down the number of every question you got wrong, along with the topic it came from. If two or three of them come from the same section of the unit, that section is what you revise next — not the whole chapter again. Then retake the test a day or two later rather than immediately, because answering correctly from memory is not the same as understanding it. Once you are consistently scoring above 20, move on and come back to this test in your final week of revision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the characteristic and the mantissa?

The characteristic is the whole-number part of a logarithm and tells you the size of the number. The mantissa is the decimal part and is read from the log table. In log 5000 = 3.698 the characteristic is 3 and the mantissa is 0.698.

Why is log 0 undefined?

Because no power of 10 ever gives 0. You can make 10 to a very negative power as small as you like, but it never actually reaches zero, so there is no answer to put in.

What is the base of the common logarithm?

Ten. When you see log written with no base at all, base 10 is assumed. The natural logarithm ln uses base e, which is about 2.718.

Is this test free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on retakes and nothing is locked. Your score is not saved or shared.
