9th Class Physics Chapter 8 Online Test: 25 MCQs with Answers

This 9th class physics chapter 8 online test covers Chapter 8 of the Class 9 Physics course, Magnetism. It has 25 multiple-choice questions, shown one at a time, and it marks itself as soon as you finish. There is no timer and no sign-up. When you press finish you get your score, and every question is shown again with your answer, the correct option and a short explanation of why that option is right. An Urdu medium version of the same test is given further down this page.

What Chapter 8 Covers

The questions are spread across the whole chapter rather than one section, so the test is a fair check of whether you are ready for a class test or the annual paper:

  • Magnetic materials — which materials are magnetic, and the difference between ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic substances.
  • Properties of magnets — how a suspended bar magnet settles, what happens when a magnet is broken into pieces, and the one reliable test for identifying a magnet.
  • Magnetic field — the region around a magnet, the direction shown by lines of force, how they run outside the magnet, and where the field is strongest.
  • Induced magnetism — nails clinging in a chain from a magnet, and what happens when the magnet is removed.
  • Electromagnets — the effect of a current-carrying coil on an iron nail, the right-hand grip rule, and why soft iron is used for the core.
  • Magnetic domains — their size, how they are arranged in an unmagnetised bar, and the double touch method of magnetising steel.
  • Demagnetisation and uses — what destroys magnetism, magnetic shielding, circuit breakers, maglev trains and the lodestone known to the Greeks.

Revise These Before You Start

Most marks in this chapter are lost on the same few points. Read through these once before attempting the test:

  • Outside a magnet the lines of force run from the north pole to the south pole, and they never cross.
  • The field is strongest where the lines of force are closest together, which is at the poles.
  • Repulsion is the only sure test for a magnet, because a magnet attracts unmagnetised magnetic material as well.
  • Breaking a magnet gives two complete magnets, each with its own north and south pole, however small the pieces.
  • Soft iron magnetises and demagnetises easily, so it is used for electromagnet cores and for shielding; steel keeps its magnetism, so it is used for permanent magnets.
  • Heating, hammering and alternating current all destroy magnetism by disturbing the alignment of the domains.

How the Test Works

  • 25 questions, one at a time, with Next and Previous buttons.
  • No timer, so you can work a numerical out on paper before answering.
  • Automatic marking the moment you finish.
  • Answer review with the correct option and an explanation for every question.
  • Retake as many times as you like, and your score is not stored anywhere.

Chapter 8 is more about reasoning than calculation, so pay attention to the exact wording of each option. Keep a pen and rough paper beside you: the numerical questions are quick, but they are much easier to get right written down than in your head. Aim for 20 out of 25 or better before you move on to the next chapter.

Mistakes Students Make in This Chapter

When you check your answer review, see whether any of your wrong answers came from these. They account for most of the marks lost in this chapter:

  • Using attraction as proof that something is a magnet, when only repulsion proves it.
  • Expecting a single pole when a magnet is cut in half.
  • Mixing up soft iron and steel, and so choosing the wrong material for a core or a permanent magnet.
  • Drawing lines of force from south to north outside the magnet.
  • Confusing paramagnetic and diamagnetic materials, which the questions test directly.

What to Do After the Test

Do not close the page as soon as you see your score. Read the explanation under every question you got wrong, then open that topic in your textbook and work through the solved example beside it. Write the questions you missed on a single sheet and attempt the test again the next day: the second score tells you what you have actually learned, while the first only tells you what you recognised. If you scored below 15, work through the chapter again before moving on, because the later chapters in Physics build directly on this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is repulsion the only sure test for a magnet?

Because a magnet attracts any magnetic material, magnetised or not, so attraction proves nothing on its own. Only another magnet is repelled, so if two objects push each other apart, both must be magnets.

Why is soft iron used for the core of an electromagnet?

Soft iron magnetises strongly when the current flows and loses almost all its magnetism the instant the current stops. That is exactly what an electromagnet needs, whereas steel would stay magnetised.

What happens if you cut a bar magnet in half?

You get two smaller bar magnets, each with a north and a south pole. You can keep dividing it and every piece remains a complete magnet, because magnetism comes from the domains inside the material.
