What the Chapter 1 Test Covers: States of Matter

The paper is set across the whole of Chapter 1 rather than one exercise, so it is a fair check of whether the chapter is finished. Questions are drawn from:

  • The three states of matter and the kinetic molecular model that explains them.
  • Diffusion and effusion, and the factors that affect the rate of each.
  • Evaporation, boiling point and the effect of pressure on boiling point.
  • Melting and freezing points, and what happens to energy during a change of state.
  • Allotropy, with the allotropic forms of carbon and sulphur.
  • Amorphous and crystalline solids, and transition temperature.

Facts You Need Before Attempting It

Most of the marks in States of Matter hang on a small number of statements being exactly right:

  • Diffusion is faster in gases than in liquids because gas molecules are far apart and move rapidly.
  • A liquid boils when its vapour pressure equals the external atmospheric pressure, which is why boiling point falls at altitude.
  • Temperature stays constant during a change of state because the energy supplied breaks forces of attraction rather than raising kinetic energy.

Where Marks Go Missing in This Chapter

  • Saying temperature rises during melting, when it stays constant.
  • Confusing evaporation, which happens at all temperatures, with boiling, which happens at a fixed one.
  • Listing allotropes of the wrong element.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does temperature stay constant while ice melts?

Because the heat supplied is used to overcome the forces holding the particles in the solid lattice rather than to increase their kinetic energy. Once all the ice has melted, further heating raises the temperature again.

Is the answer key included?

An answer key for the multiple-choice section is printed at the end of the paper. The written sections should be marked against your textbook and the solved chapter notes.
